Sierra Leone-born people are relatively new to Australia. The majority of Sierra Leoneans arrived in Australia after 2001 under the Humanitarian Program.

The 2016 census recorded 3,410 Sierra Leone-born people in Australia. New South Wales had the largest number with 1,601 followed by Western Australia (504), Queensland (437) and Victoria (376).
