The number of Bangladeshis settling permanently in Australia has increased significantly in recent years. The 2016 Census recorded 41,237 people from Bangladesh living in Australia, an increase of 48.3 per cent from the 2011 Census.
This was up from 16,100 recorded in the 2006 Census, which was in turn an increase of 77.8 per cent from the 2001 Census. Sporting links have also played an important role in strengthening Australia-Bangladesh relations. Almost 40,000 Australians claim Bangladeshi ancestry.
