The first Maltese-born people arrived in Australia as convicts in 1810, followed by the first free settlers in 1838. The peak period of migration to Australia occurred in the 1950s and 1960s. The 2016 Census recorded 175,559 people in Australia with Maltese ancestry and 37,609 people who were born in Malta.
