Portuguese Australians form an active community in many fields of Australian life. With sporting teams, social clubs, radio shows, newspapers, outdoor cultural festivals and culinary feasts, the ever-growing Portuguese Australians form roughly 0.4% of Australia’s population. The biggest Portuguese Australian community is in Petersham, Sydney, but there are many other communities around the country.
According to the 2016 census, 61,886 Australians claim Portuguese ancestry while 15,804 are Portuguese-born. These community links have produced a steady flow of family visits and cultural exchanges in recent decades.
