A handful of people from Papua New Guinea, crew members of boats and mission-sponsored villagers, visited Australia in the 1870s. In the early 1880s, more than 3000 Papuan labourers were recruited for the Queensland sugarcane fields.
Australia is PNG’s largest trading and commercial partner, reflecting the close historical association between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
The 2016 Census recorded 28,800 Papua New Guinea-born people in Australia. Queensland had the largest number with 16,120 followed by New South Wales (5,466), Victoria (2,611) and Western Australia (2,031).
